Greeting Cards

If you haven't already guessed, I should tell you that I am a little old-fashioned at times. So much so that I sometimes wonder if I shouldn't have been born a few decades before I actually was. I studied Communications for eight years so I have been closely watching media and technological advances as they evolve and change the way we communicate. I like to think that this blog is part of my acceptance of those changes. I resisted the idea of writing a blog for a long time because, to me, the growing popularity of social media is directly linked to the disappearance of wonderful traditions such as sending an old-fashioned letter in the mail.

I appreciate the simplicity of the good old snail mail and cherish my mailbox more than anyone I know. Getting a card from a friend or family member is such a wonderful perk to my day, like a surprise wish, a gift, a greeting from a close one amidst a bunch of bills and unwanted junk mail.

As much as I love receiving packages and letters in the mail, I think that I like sending them even more. I still send out invitations for our annual Thanksgiving dinner to all our guests and I am always stunned to find out how much people appreciate the gesture. I have visited friends' homes months later to find the invitation still posted to their fridge door like a souvenir. How touching.

I also send birthday cards to friends, whether they live two blocks away or across the country and have received phone calls from guy friends thanking me for the gesture with genuine appreciation. I thought most guys, not knowing how long to keep the damn card for, were somewhat annoyed by cards and did not know what to do with them but, as it turns out, some of them are as sentimental as I am.

I haven't been writing cards in the past little while for the very lame reason that I'm out of cards and need to restock. One of my favourite stationary shops here in Vancouver is called Regional Assembly of Text.

And I particularly fond of Darling Clementine's online store.

I have also seen some great designs online, especially on Etsy. Here are a few examples of Etsy stores that I have come across:

As most of us know by now, Etsy can be a touch overwhelming at times and I admit that I need help. Where do you get your stationary? I'm looking for more recommendations of online stores where I can purchase beautiful cards to be delivered to my front door...so that I can send them to someone else's front door and keep the tradition going. Any ideas to share? Or am I the only one who still writes sappy letters?
